We got to offer incense to the local Buddhist deities and sake to the mountain god……maybe forest folk don’t like big fires in winter at the driest time of year.
I read a newsletter (or was it a show on NHK...?) about a festival like this last year that featured outstanding photos. But I can't remember now who or where it was!

Yeah this might not be a great idea for mountain people. The entire fire department was on hand yesterday just in case things got out of hand.
Once the burn was confirmed under control, the boys got right in line for hot sake and tonjiru. Hahahah!

Great writeup! These are the people unfortunately who are on their backs now due to the recent huge quake. Hope they and their festival recover soon.
Agreed. Finding a way back to the ritual is part of the recovery, though, or a sign of it, at least.
Have to agree. Maybe if we all got together a little more often...
Especially like your last comment about this being something all people should do. Don’t confuse it with bonfire night or a GOP book burning, mind.
Yeah. Zero books were burned in that tower of stuff…
I’m reasonably sure. :)
That’s why you write so well, you are a dragon la me!
Do Dragons write?? I had no idea!
